GUWAHATI — In yet another incident, a Muslim man was beaten to death by a mob on Friday on suspicion of vehicle theft in Manipur’s Tharoijam area.

According to police, residents of Tharoijam village allegedly beat 26-year-old Farooq Khan to death and destroyed a car he was travelling in early on Thursday. However, two people accompanying him managed to escape.

The incident sparked fears of communal tension in the area as locals of Tharoijam attacked the Patsoi police station, demanding unconditional release of those arrested, The Indian Express reported. The station incharge was injured in the protest.

Following the incident, Manipur police arrested five people, including a personnel of India Reserve Battalion (IRB), according to reports. Thirteen people who attacked the trio have been identified and will be arrested soon, they added.

Villagers alleged that Mr Khan and his friends were caught stealing a two-wheeler around 3.30 am that day, police said they are yet to verify it.

A suo moto case was taken up by the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and it directed the Manipur DGP to submit a report by September 22.

Muslim groups held that the victim was innocent, and have asked the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. .

A Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed which claimed that the deceased, an MBA student, was innocent and had reportedly left home to meet a friend, according to reports.

The JAC has also taken a note of police inaction despite being present at the spot of the incident. The JAC  demanded the guilty police personnel be appropriately punished.

BJP-ruled Manipur has witnessed a spate of lynchings in recent months. Two people, a local from Imphal (West) district and an outsider, were brutally assaulted by local residents on suspicion of child-lifting in Kangpokpi district two months ago.

  1. More mob murder in the Acche Din
Mob violence is at all time high all over the country and this Govt. Has little interest in curbing mob murder, vigilanteism. Police seem interested only in arresting , harrassing innocent people.
