KOZHIKODE – As the fire against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is also raging to South,  Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, a social organization, held a massive protest rally on Saturday evening here. The rally called upon all secular political parties and other organizations to join hands in opposing the new act which it called blatantly violates the Constitution.

In his inaugural speech,  Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal said the amended Act  was in contravention of Article 14 of the Constitution, which ensures equality for all before the law. India is constitutionally not a religious state, and citizenship should not be granted on the basis of religion, he added.

He warned that the Act was  a significant step in undermining  the  democratic and secular state and  pushing it  into an authoritarian and racist nation by singling out Muslims as second class without any civil rights.

Thangal also warned that no government has any right to disrupt the fundamental values of India.

“This Act aims to further sharpen the communal divide and social polarization in the country, which is dangerously detrimental to the unity and integrity of our country.”

He also pointed out  that it was a part of RSS’ larger  design  to change the character of the Indian Republic – from a secular democratic one into  the Brahminical  project and  the act  must be  seen along with the proclamation  by the Modi-Shah government extending NPR  in the entire country.

“It is our responsibility to join hands together to save and protect this great nation and also save democracy and the Constitution,” he said.

In his presidential remarks,  Sayyid Muhammad Jifri Muthukkoya Thangal, the President of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, said the new law divides people in the name of religion, therefore it  cannot be accepted.

“The Act is in gross violation of the secular and democratic ethos envisaged in the Constitution. It must be a matter of concern of every Indian citizen that not only Muslims but all the people because this Act is complete violate of the Indian Constitution and aimed at destroying the secular democratic foundations of the Indian Republic.”

“Supreme court of India failed to do justice with the Muslim community in the Babri Masjid title suit case”, he said.

The rally was addressed by a host of non-Muslim leaders  including former Maharashtra governor Sankara Narayanan, M.K Raghavan(M.P) Binoy Vishwam (M.P), P Surendran (Prominent Malayalam Writer), E.K Vijayan MLA, Jo Antony (National Secretary, Samajvadi Party) and others.
