NEW DELHI: A noted human rights organization on Monday condemned arresting of a publisher by Kerala police on allegation of publishing provocative literature on Saturday in Kozhikode district.
In a press statement Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP) termed it as ‘malicious intent’ of Kerala police targeting Muslims under the smokescreen of disturbing communal harmony and demanded unconditional immediate release of the publisher named PK AbdurRehman.
Rehman was arrested by Nadakkavu police in Kozhikode district and charged with Section 153-A of Indian Penal Code for publishing Malayalam translation of an alleged communally inciting Urdu book written by the Hyderabad-based scholarMaulana Abdul AleemIslahi.
Police produced PK AbdurRehman before the Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate Court where he was remanded for 14 days judicial custody.
“Yet again the Kerala police have shown their credentials as a force that has more in common with their counterparts in the rest of the subcontinent when it comes to their attitude towards the minorities, especially the Muslims,” the statement which was released from CRPP president SAR Geelani and general secretary Amit Bhattacharyya reads.
“The State response to this assertion of the Kerala Muslim in the public domain has been fraught with the stereotypes of profiling them as communal, untrustworthy and hence a constant threat to what is being told as the idea of a ‘nation’,” It further reads.
According to CRPP, Rahman is associated with publishing company Nanma Books in Calicut as Managing Director and the book which is a Malayalam translated version of a book originally written by noted Islamic cleric of Hyderabad Maulana Abdul AleemIslahi, has nothing to do with the disturbance of communal harmony.
“It is a research oriented academic work dwelling deeper into the etymology of the word ‘Jihad’ and how it has been mentioned in various religious scriptures and other works of importance as well as the context in which such references has been made.” CRPP also points out that the FIR which was lodged in this regard shows that paragraphs and quotes have been selectively lifted out of context from the book trying to fit it under 153 Cr PC.
