Hindu-Muslim Duo Lynched in West Bengal Over Suspicion of Cattle Theft

KOLKATA — In Mathabanga area of Cooch Behar district in West Bengal, a group of people reportedly lynched two persons over suspicion of cattle theft on Thursday.

According to PTI report, two persons Rabiul Islam and Prakash Das were ferrying two cows in a van when the mob stopped them and attacked.

After questioning the duo about their whereabouts, the mob beat them mercilessly and set the van on fire. The brutally injured duo were taken to a hospital by Police where they succumbed to their injuries, Police said.

Around 14 persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident.

According to police information, a mob stopped the van and recovered the cows, which it claimed were stolen from the area a few days ago and were being taken to cattle smugglers.

The West Bengal Assembly had recently passed the West Bengal (Prevention of Lynching) Bill, 2019, which is waiting for the governor’s assent.
