GUWAHATI — The chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Badruddin Ajmal, on Monday, said his party would not contest for all eight seats in the state and has decided to contest on just three seats making room for Congress to contest on five seats.

AIUDF earlier had planned to contest on all eight seats but now saying that the party would sacrifice its own prospects in the Lok Sabha polls to counter BJP in Assam it has taken decision to leave five seats for the Congress to contest.

The party, led by perfume baron Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, will field candidates only in Dhubri, Karimganj and Barpeta.

“We have decided we won’t contest beyond three seats. Our main concern is to stop the division of secular votes, which will give BJP an advantage. Our sole aim is to stop BJP,” AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam said.

BJP and its ally in the state Asom Gana Parishad called the decision of the AIUDF as “unholy nexus” between Congress and the Badruddin’s party.

“Earlier, AIUDF said it would field candidates in all constituencies where there is a substantial minority voter base. This sudden change of plans makes it clear AIUDF and Congres have entered an understanding,” said Ranjeet Kumar Dass, president of BJP’s Assam unit.

He further said that this won’t help either party as people of Assam don’t want politics here to centre around one community, reports The Times of India.

AIUDF, however, rejected the claim of any electoral understanding with Congress.

Congress said AIUDF decision was a sign of “weakness.”

“Had AIUDF been strong enough, it would not have come closer to Congress,” said former CM and Congress veteran Tarun Gogoi, according to reports.

It should be mentioned here that the AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal had on Saturday made an appeal to Congress to come together in the fight against BJP.
