NEW DELHI — The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on Thursday issued notice to the Rajasthan government over the brutal murder of dairy farmer Ummar Khan. Ummar, 42, was allegedly shot dead by a gang of self-styled Gau Rakshaks on Friday morning in Alwar district.

The NCM chairman Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi, through the notice, has sought full details about the incident and action taken against the culprit cow vigilantes.

A Bharatpur native, Ummar, and two of his co-villagers, Tahir and Jabir, were returning home from Ramgarh with a few cows when their pick-up vehicle was waylaid in Alwar and they were attacked with firearms. While Ummar, father of eight children, died on the spot, Tahir and Jabir managed to flee with the bullet wounds.

The attackers later took Ummar’s body and put it on a railway track, 15 kms from the site of the attack. They did so to destroy the evidence of the murder and to show his death as an accident. Though Ummar’s body was crushed, the parts wherein bullets had pierced remained intact. Tahir and Jabir also later told Ummar’s family about the attack.

His body was sent to Jaipur for autopsy on Sunday. For next three days, his family did not allow postmortem demanding arrest of the killers and monetary compensation. On Tuesday, the police arrested two of the culprits while four are still on run.

The autopsy was conducted on Ummar’s body on Wednesday evening.  While the state government did not announce any compensation to the family, some civil organizations and Muslim groups collected a sum of Rs 50,000 and gave it to the widow. They also promised to give Rs5 lakh more.
