LUCKNOW – Thirty-nine Muslims, which includes 19 women, cracked Uttar Pradesh’s judicial civil service examination (2018), and it is being considered as one of the best performances by the candidates belonging to this minority community. Some of them have reportedly secured success after having battled various odds and adversities in their personal lives.
The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) conducts the PCS-J exams in three phases – namely, the preliminary exam, followed by the mains exam and finally, the interview round. The prelims were conducted on 16 December, 2018 for which 64691 candidates had applied. Only 6,041 candidates qualified for the subsequent mains exam which was conducted on 30, 31 January and 1st February 2019. A total of 5,795 students appeared for this, out of which 1,847 qualified for the final interview which took place from 21 June to 17 July 2019. Out of the total, only 610 candidates could clear the last round and make it to the final merit list. Last time, this exam had been held in 2016.
According to the final results released by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Examination (UPPSC) on Saturday, Akansha Tiwari has emerged as the topper among all the qualified candidates while Shahanwaz Siddiqui secured the best rank (11th) among Muslim candidates. Khairun Nisa got the best rank (33th) among Muslim women. There are 7 Muslims, including 4 women in the top 100 – namely, Heena Kausar, Meher Jahan, and Umaima Shahanwaz, apart from Nisa. Siddiqui, Jaseem Khan, and Asif Nawaz Khan are the three men in that list.
Mehnaz Khan succeeded in the competition despite being married in a village in Bulandpur where the electricity and internet access was not in proper working conditions. The success story of Huma, hailing from Meerut is also very inspiring as she was able to crack the exam in spite of severe financial challenges. She succeeded in her third attempt, while her father died an unnatural death and her brother was reportedly murdered.
The PCS-J results clearly show that many Muslims have shifted their focus towards the judiciary, owing to tough times faced by the community as a result of increasing hate crimes and lynchings.
