GUWAHATI — At a time when India is going to polls for Lok Sabha, poor Muslims are still unsafe in the country and the recent incident shows as if goons are always there to attack the members of the minority community on any pretext.
In a shocking incident a 68-year old man named Shaukat Ali was thrashed by an angry mob for allegedly carrying beef and forced to consume pork in Biswanath Chariali of Assam on Monday.
This happened in a state where beef is not illegal as more than 10 different non-Muslim communities consume the meat.
A mob of Hindu goons thrashed a local resident Shaukat Ali while on his way to a ‘line’ hotel, a business he has been reportedly running for 35 years. He was alleged to carry beef.
According to report when the 68-old man was being thrashed, the attackers were abusing his religion and were recording the inhuman act on smartphones.
The situation grew tense as locals surrounded the man after he was accused of carrying beef and he was subsequently thrashed and forced to eat pork.
Later when police arrived at the spot after the incident, Ali was taken to the Civil Hospital in Bishwanath Chariali and the mob was dispersed.
Scroll reports the mob asked the victim whether he was Bangladeshi and if his name was on the National Register of Citizens.
Two complaints were filed, one by Ali’s relative and another by the market’s manager, based on which the police registered an FIR, according to the report. But, the district police chief Rakesh Roushan said it was “not a matter of communal tension”.
“We picked up five people, including two market committee leaders, in a bid to disperse the mob. They were allowed to go after signing a good behaviour bond under Section 107 of Code of Criminal Procedure,” a district administration official told The Hindu.
