NEW DELHI — The BJP government of Uttar Pradesh, headed by Yogi Adityanath, cancelled the recruitment of 4,000 Urdu teachers on Monday, nullifying the decision of the earlier UP government of Akhilesh Yadav.

The announcement for cancellation was made by Additional Chief Secretary of Basic Education Department of Uttar Pradesh giving the reason that there were already enough Urdu teachers and recruitment is not required, says India Today.

Under the government of Akhilesh Yadav, the recruitment for Urdu teachers was started on December 15, 2016, for primary schools under the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board or Uttar Pradesh Basic Shiksha Parishad.

In 2016, the total posts for teachers announced in UP were 16,460, out of which 4,000 posts were for Urdu teachers.

The online application process was started from December 23, 2016, and the application was submitted till January 2017. The counselling date was announced in March 2017, reports Jagran Hindi daily. But then BJP came to power in the state defeating Samajwadi Party of Akhilesh Yadav.

On March 23, 2017, the Yogi government stopped the recruitment process and didn’t forward it for one year as per a report in Amar Ujala. Due to this, the candidates went to the Allahabad High Court. The High Court instructed the Basic Education Department to complete the recruitment process, India Today reports.

However, the Additional Chief Secretary of Basic Education Department, Prabhat Kumar, on Monday, said that there is a large number of Urdu teachers working in the primary schools which is why recruitment was not required.

The Yogi government, as reported, will file a review petition against the decision of the High Court soon.

The decision of Yogi government, however, has raised questions on the intention of the BJP government regarding Muslims in the state.

Urdu scholars and Madrasa heads along with known clerics have condemned the decision of the Yogi government to cancel the recruitment of Urdu teachers and asked for the review of the decision.

Maulana Khalid Rasheed, Executive Committee Member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Sufiyan Nizami, Madarsa Firangi Mahal, Maulana Adil Faraz, Urdu Scholar and Maulan Saif Abbas, Madarsa Abu Talib are among others who have condemned the decision of Yogi government and said the decision is based on hate against Urdu and also against BJP’s slogan of sab ka saath sab ka vikas.

Since BJP came to power in Lucknow and Yogi became chief minister, the state government has taken several steps targeting the minority community.

On the eve of Independence Day, UP Madarsa Board’s education centres were asked to unfurl National Flag in their premises and send video records of the events to the concerned authorities. The move was seen as a direct attack rather suspicion on the patriotism of Muslim minority.

The office of the Uttar Pradesh Waqf Board in Lucknow was also painted with saffron colour last year. Though the colour was changed after the protests from certain quarters but that was intended to saffronise the Board.

Now in the first major step, that too negative, regarding Muslim education in UP, the state BJP government has dealt a blow to the community. Instead of giving any other additional relief and encouraging scheme to promote education among Muslim community, the Yogi government has cancelled the recruitment of 4,000 Urdu teachers.
