Muslims Do Not Need Your Lessons, Zakir Musa

Militant Zakir Musa is thriving by inciting religious sentiments and pushing the agenda of Hindutva fanatics.

We Indian Muslims preach and propagate peace not out of weakness, as Musa alleged, but out of our conviction that violence cannot be countered by violence. If anything was to be attained by totting a gun then Kashmir’s problem would have been solved long ago

THREE days ago, the 22-year militant Zakir Musa released a message for Muslims in rest of India in which he called us spineless, urged us to avenge the killings carried out by gau rakshaks and bemoaned the rape of a Muslim woman in Bijnor. He also mocked us for preaching and propagating peace.

Just like his ideological forefathers, Musa is thriving by inciting religious sentiments. By calling for the so-called jihad he is inviting non-Kashmiri Indian Muslims to jump into a bottom less pit of violence and counter violence. In a nutshell he is advancing the cause of Hindutva fanatics who are ever on the lookout for an opportunity to demonize Muslims and propagate hate and disunity.

Abhorrent as the rape of the Muslim woman in Bijnor was, there is no reason to give the crime a religious hue. Rape is turning into an epidemic which sees no religion, race or class and there is nothing to indicate that the woman was raped because of her Muslim identity. Moreover the people, who got hold of the sub inspector, thrashed him up and handed him over to the police were random travelers.

Few young Indians today have any interaction or contact with Muslim Indians.

By calling for the so-called jihad he is inviting non-Kashmiri Indian Muslims to jump into a bottom less pit of violence and counter violence. In a nutshell he is advancing the cause of Hindutva fanatics who are ever on the lookout for an opportunity to demonize Muslims and propagate hate and disunity

Going by the rule of probability most of them had to be non-Muslims.  In fact, whenever Indian Muslims are met with an atrocity there are more non-Muslim voices raised in protest than Muslim voices. Be it the lynching by gau rakshak or pellet blinding in Kashmir the loudest and bravest voices of protest have belonged to the non-Muslims of India.

It’s true that the mainstreaming of the fringe in last three years has left us Muslims to grapple with much insecurity and fear but we are in no mood to accede to call for violence.

Fortunately among Muslims masses sense prevails over adrenaline rush and basic humanity enshrined in the Quran prevails over religious fanaticism. We preach and propagate peace not out of weakness, as Musa alleged, but out of our conviction that violence cannot be countered by violence. If anything was to be attained by trotting a gun then Kashmir’s problem would have been solved long ago.

What we need is not Musa’s rant but a unified front to demand our rights and justice through constitutional and peaceful means.

It is to this land of India that we belong. We have coexisted here with other communities in a largely peaceful state, since many centuries before there was any Zakir Musa or his ideology and we will continue to exist here peacefully long after him.
