Satanic Forces

The very idea of India as a pluralistic, inclusive polity is under assault as never before. Falsification of history is pursued with renewed vigor under state patronage  in a world of ‘alternative facts’ ; lies have become a way of life. In ‘secular’ India the blatant use of sectarian appeal for political advantage  is pursued without qualms. This litany of laments could go on endlessly, but what is the remedy?

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]erpetrators of evil are masquerading in many guises, in many places. Some kill in the name of religion, some out of racial hatred and yet some on the pretext of protecting cows. Churches are bombed, mosques are torn down or burned, worshippers gunned, innocent bystanders shot or run over. Satanic forces are playing out this ghastly dance of death to the rhythm of uncontrolled bigotry, hatred and intolerance. Bloodthirsty hounds have been let loose to tear apart our morality and numb our sensibilities, inuring us to the ceaseless violence that repeats itself with sickening regularity.

Nearer home, those entrusted with enforcing the law embrace criminals who break it with impunity, becoming complicit through their inaction or connivance. Those elected to lead, shamelessly mislead into the darkest alleys of abomination and depths of degradation. Civil society looks helplessly on as goons seize control. The political class provides little hope for redress; the corrupt and supine bureaucracy even less so. Civil liberties, freedom of expression, human rights, courtesy, decency, kindness and care all seem to belong to a bygone era.

In the  land of Gautam and Gandhi, this trajectory of turpitude  can be reversed by following their creed of ‘ahimsa’ and ‘shanti’, non-violence and peace.They could serve as potent antidotes to the poison of hatred that has seeped so deep into our social and political fabric. The scientific temperament that Nehru tried his best  to bequeath to the nation can be fostered not by spinning myths but by establishing facts.

Azad’s message of unity and harmony can still show the  way to social cohesion; Ambedkar’s thoughts can yet illuminate the way to social justice. Subhas Chandra Bose’s nationalism was no mere jingoism, nor a manifestation of meaningless bravado. To salvage our cherished idea of a modern, progressive nation, governed according to our constitution and the rule of law, we must resurrect our venerated icons who guided us through our struggle for freedom and nationhood, and not allow them to be replaced and their legacy usurped by those who played no part in it. Surely what is being enacted on the national stage is not the ” tryst with destiny” that Jawaharlal invoked in his famous midnight speech.

The prestige of our nation was enhanced by the work of our intellectuals and professionals, who earned respect across the world for their competence. They include Nobel laureates, they head global corporations, they adorn the faculties of the world’s best universities.

India  arrived on the world stage, proudly taking its rightful place in the comity of nations. Are we going to allow all this to be demolished? Are we going to be led into the future not by our luminaries, but by criminal politicians with unsavory pasts. Are we going to let fascist formations tear down our democracy and tear up our cherished constitution? India stands at a crossroads; the choice is stark and the time to choose is now. Which direction will we opt for? Which destiny do we desire? Our choices are aptly summed up in the following quotations:

Nor public flame, nor private, dares to shine;

Nor human spark is left, nor glimpse divine!

Lo! thy dread empire, Chaos! is restored;

Light dies before thy uncreating word:

Thy hand, great Anarch! lets the curtain fall;

And universal darkness buries all.”

–Alexander Pope

OR

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high

Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments

By narrow domestic walls

Where words come out from the depth of truth

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way

Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit

Where the mind is led forward by Thee

Into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

–Rabindranath Tagore

Let us hope that the India we build is the fulfillment of Tagore’s dream and not the handiwork of the Great Anarch.
