BENGALURU: Unlike the 2013 Assembly polls, the Muslim representation in the Assembly has gone down in this election with only 7 of the Muslim candidates winning their seats.
The seven winning Muslim candidates are from Congress and five of them are sitting MLAs. They include veteran Muslim politician Roshan Baig who won his stronghold Shivajinagar seat. Baig has won the seat by defeating BJP candidate with a margin over over 15,000 votes.
Among the winners is a Muslim woman Kaneez Fatima who has won the Gulbarga Uttar seat by her nearest BJP rival with around 6,000 votes.
With rise of BJP from 40 seats in the Assembly polls 2013 to 104 this time, the number of Muslim winners has slipped from 11 to 7.
Elections for the 224-member Assembly were held on 12th May.
