As BJP strength jumped up from 40 to 104 seats, Muslims’ share in the Assembly slipped from 11 to 7.
BENGALURU: The Muslim representation in the new Karnataka Assembly will be smaller than that in the outgoing house. Only seven Muslims could win in the Assembly polls held on 12th May, for which results were announced on Tuesday. In the 2013 polls, eleven Muslim candidates had won.
The Muslim share has slipped as BJP’s strength went up from 40 seats in the 2013 polls to 104 seats in this poll. However, the saffron party fell short of the simple majority mark of 113 seats in the 224-member Assembly.
Among the Muslim winners are Congress veteran Roshan Baig and woman candidate Kaneez Fatima. Baig won from his stronghold Shivajinagar, Fatima won from Gulbarga Uttar.
All the Muslim candidates have won by defeating BJP candidates as nearest rivals.

All the seven winning Muslim candidates are from the Congress – five of them had won the 2013 Assembly polls also on the party ticket.
The ruling party Congress has got huge defeat as its tally of 122 seats in 2013 went down to 78 in this poll. On the other hand, the Janata Dal (Secular) of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda has almost maintained its position. It had won 40 seats last time and in this election it won 37 seats.
Besides the seven Muslim winners, nine other candidates from the community finished at No. 2 in this poll.
