BENGALURU: The Muslim representation in the new Karnataka Assembly will be smaller than that in the outgoing house. Only seven Muslims could win in the Assembly polls held on 12th May, for which results were announced on Tuesday. In the 2013 polls, eleven Muslim candidates had won.

The Muslim share has slipped as BJP’s strength went up from 40 seats in the 2013 polls to 104 seats in this poll. However, the saffron party fell short of the simple majority mark of 113 seats in the 224-member Assembly.

Among the Muslim winners are Congress veteran Roshan Baig and woman candidate Kaneez Fatima. Baig won from his stronghold Shivajinagar, Fatima won from Gulbarga Uttar.

All the Muslim candidates have won by defeating BJP candidates as nearest rivals.
