LUCKNOW: Former Inspector General of Police S.R. Darapuri was arrested here on Saturday for protesting against ‘Dalit Mitra’ award to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
On the occasion of 127th birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, a little-known outfit Ambedkar Mahasabha was presenting ‘Dalit Mitra’ award to CM Yogi. Several Dalit activists including former IG Darapuri reached the venue to protest against the event. But they were arrested by the police.
Around 11 AM, Darapuri posted on Facebook that he and some others have been arrested. Others activists arrested included Harish Chandra, NS Chaurasia, Gajodar Prasad.
Describing these arrests as undemocratic, Advocate Mohammad Shoaib, president of rights group Rihai Manch, said that “The arrest of Darapuri and his colleague has exposed ‘Dalit Mitra’ Yogi. He said that Darapuri told him over phone that the police was taking him towards Bakhshi Talab, Sitarpur. He said that he had opposed Dr Lal Ji Nirmal who was honoring Yogi with ‘Dalit Mitra’ award.
Many Dalit organizations had opposed the decision of Ambedkar Sabha to honor Yogi.
