DUBAI: Following the huge, unprecedented global condemnation that its star chef Atul Kochhar earned for his anti-Islam comment, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai has terminated his services. Dubai-based Indian chef would run the Rang Mahal restaurant of the international hotel.
In a tweet on Sunday, he had said that “Hindus have been terrorized by Islam over 2000 years…” His tweet led to an outrage on social media with thousands of people demanding his careless, objectionable comment about Islam.
Following the condemnation, Kochhar apologized on Monday and Tuesday and deleted his tweet. The hotel had also distanced itself from his comment. However, this could not pacify people. And consequently, the hotel was forced to terminate his services on Wednesday.
“Following the recent comments made by Chef Atul Kochhar, we have taken the decision to end our agreement with him for Rang Mahal. With the termination of our agreement, Chef Atul will no longer be associated with the restaurant and the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai,” the hotel said.
“At the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, we pride ourselves on creating a culture of diversity and inclusion for our guests and associates across the hotel and our restaurants. We also remain committed to delivering the traditional culinary experience and high service standards that Rang Mahal is renowned for,” Bill Keffer, General Manager of the hotel said.

On Sunday noon, Kochhar had tweeted: “It’s sad to see that you have not respected the sentiments of Hindus who have been terrorised by Islam over 2000 years. Shame on you.” He had tweeted this in response to Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra’s apology over a Quantico episode that portrayed Hindu nationalists as terrorists.
The hotel took decision to terminate his services following the media reports that Kochhar could be prosecuted for his anti-Islam comment.
