The media which had been screaming about the arrest of 12 Jaish ‘terrorists’ remains curiously silent after 10 of them are let off. The media is not the only one found napping. Kejriwal and his hyperactive Aam Aadmi Party have also fared well in selective utilization of vigor at the cost of issues that really matter and haunt the Muslim community

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n the first week of May 2016, 12 Muslim men were picked up from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh by Delhi Police’s now famous Special Cell. They were linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, claimed the police.

“We have detained 12 people from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for subscribing JeM ideology. They were detained late on Tuesday night. One Improvised Explosive Device (IED) has been recovered from them,” Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Arvind Deep had told news agency IANS on May 5.

They were paraded in front of the media as dreaded “terrorists”. Our fodder-desperate media as usual jumped on the story. The trophy catch of Delhi Police Special Cell enjoyed coverage in all main stream news publications.

A few days later four of these men were released after intervention of the Home Ministry. Following them, six more were released. All of them were apparently let off because no evidence could be found against them.

The media which had been screaming about these latest arrests and had been proactive in maligning these men lost all its vigor when time came for retracting the false story and undoing the damage. The absence of evidence against them went largely unreported. It was covered only by some non-mainstream news portals like MuslimMirror, TCN and Ummid etc.

Media is not the only one found napping. Kejriwal and his hyperactive Aam Aadmi Party have also fared well in selective utilization of vigor at the cost of issues that really matter and haunt the Muslim community even though it is an established fact that the AAP could never have tasted the spectacular victory it did in Delhi without the massive Muslim support.

Post elections, the party claiming to fight corruption and injustice, it seems, has donned the same old garb that Muslims have grown tired of seeing on Congress all these years. Lip service coupled with practical apathy.

Even as these ten men all under 30 stand scarred for life not because any evidence was found against them but because of police’s perpetual witch hunt and media’s lack of reporting ethics, the AAP government in Delhi remains mute on this travesty of justice. Not a single statement on this from AAP nor a word of condemnation for Kejriwal’s famous ‘thullas’ this time around.

It is good how AAP is going out of its way to hound PM Narender Modi over his questionable university degrees. Their efforts are praiseworthy. India deserves to know the truth. However, it would have been laudable and reassuring for Muslims if AAP had bestowed a quarter of that concern on the rehabilitation of these 10 Muslims.

One only needs to listen to the accounts of a handful of people declared innocent after being made terror suspects to realize how difficult life becomes after being implicated and condemned for life in a terrorism case. Social stigmatization in their own community, financial crunch, psychological trouble and substantially shrunk career prospects are just a few of the thorns that come their way. It should not be forgotten that AAP had ensured the safety and rehabilitation of even the juvenile who had played main role in the gruesome rape and murder of Nirbhaya. In contrast innocent Muslim men it seems do not have in them what it takes to evoke a state’s humanity.
