LONDON — A shocking video, making rounds on the internet, shows that UK Police officers repeatedly striking a Muslim man over the head in a bid to detain him. Two officers hold the man’s arms apart while one repeatedly hits him on the head.
25-year-old Shariff Athman, who claims to have filmed the scene, said the man had ‘apparently resisted arrest’ but said the force reaction was ‘shocking’.
A short video clip shows three male officers and one female officer hitting the Muslim man repeatedly over the head while holding his arms apart. One of the four officers closed the door to block out the camera’s view of the arrest.
Initially, there was confusion about the location of the incident as forces around the country rushed to distance themselves from the video. But later West Midlands Police confirmed the video involved their officers, adding that the Professional Standards department will consider whether the matter needs to be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
In a Tweet the force said: ‘West Midland Police is aware of video footage that has been posted to social media, that shows a man being restrained by officers.
Meanwhile, West Midlands Police have launched an investigation into a video shared thousands of times online that appears to show unidentified officers repeatedly striking a man.
The clip purportedly shows a group of uniformed policemen and one policewoman surrounding the black man.
One officer appears to repeatedly hit the man and use pepper spray. The man is seen cowering and raising his hands to protect himself.
