Mamata’s claim comes two days after Raj Thackeray, chief of MNS, had claimed of another “Pulwama-like” terror attack before the Lok Sabha polls. Probe sought into Raj’s claim.
KOLKATA (Agencies) – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the Narendra Modi government of planning another strike and indicated that the long-drawn Lok Sabha election process was intended to facilitate this.
“..some journalists have given me the information that they are plan(ning) for another strike in the name of so-called…so-called…so-called in April. What strike I will not say. That is why this (election) continues up to May 19,” she told reporters at the state secretariat-Nabanna.
Banerjee also said polling personnel and voters would face oppressively hot weather conditions due to the long schedule.
“I have never seen so long (a schedule),” she said.
Asked about the seven-phase polls in the state, she said, “The seven-phase polls will be in UP, Bihar and West Bengal. Actually, these states will play a key role to form the new government. We are happy and (there is) no problem. It is the discretion of the Election Commission and I have respect for the constitutional body.”
Banerjee said her Trinamool Congress would win all the state’s 42 Lok Sabha seats.
Probe sought in Raj Thackeray’s claim
Meanwhile, Veteran journalist and lawyer S Balakrishnan has sought a police inquiry into Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray”s claim of another “Pulwama-like” terror attack before the Lok Sabha polls.
Balakrishnan Sunday submitted a written complaint to the Chembur police station, in Mumbai demanding an inquiry under relevant laws into the claim made by the MNS chief about a possible terror attack in the country, police said on Monday.
Citing media reports, Balakrishnan said Thackeray had said, “Mark my words there will be yet another Pulwama- like incident in the country”.
According to the application, Thackeray is a senior and responsible politician, whose statements should be taken seriously.
He appears to be certain of a repeat of the Pulwama-type terror attack that took place on February 14 and resulted in the killing of 40 CRPF jawans in Jammu and Kashmir, the journalist-lawyer said.
The police should record Thackeray”s statement and inquire into his claim, said Balakrishnan.
“We have received the application of the journalist in connection with the remarks of MNS president Raj Thackeray,” said an official of the Chembur police station.
Addressing the MNS’ 13th-anniversary celebrations some three days back Raj Thackeray had alleged that Pulwama like strike will be organised in two months.
“Mark my words – another Pulwama-type strike will be organised in the next two months, during the Lok Sabha elections, to divert peoples’ attention from all problems to patriotism,” Raj said.
This is because, Thackeray alleged, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “miserably failed” in all their policies, including the Ram temple issue, or bringing back fugitive mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar.
“The Pulwama attacks, in which 40 men (CRPF troopers) were killed, resulted in diverting attention from all the burning problems and the failures of BJP and Modi, and there were debates on nationalism,” he said, according to media reports.
