NEW DELHI – After Congress leader have complained of security threat to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Ministry of Home Affairs said that the laser light pointed at Gandhi was from ‘Mobile Phone’ of the photographer of the Congress party.
The Congress has claimed that a green laser, that could potentially have been from a sniper gun, was pointed at the Congress Chief’s head multiple times during his visit to Amethi on Wednesday, 10 April, alleging a breach in security.
In a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, three senior Congress leaders wrote that while Rahul Gandhi was filing his nomination in Amethi for the Lok Sabha polls, “…a laser (green) was pointed at his head, intermittently on at least 7 separate occasions in a short period; including twice at his temple on the right side of the head”.
The MHA said that while they had not received any letter regarding the alleged breach, the Director (SPG) had been asked about it. He informed MHA that they had gone through the video clipping of the incident and found that it was that of a mobile phone used by an AICC photographer.
The “green light” shown in the clipping was found to be that of a mobile phone used by the AICC photographer, who was videographing the impromptu press interaction of Shri Rahul Gandhi near the collectorate at Amethi. Director (SPG) has also informed MHA that this position was conveyed to the personal staff of Shri Rahul Gandhi. Dir (SPG) has confirmed that there was no security implication whatsoever.”
“Potential Weapon Such as Sniper Gun”
The letter, signed by Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala, then referred to a video that has been attached as proof. In the video, Gandhi can be seen interacting with media personnel while the green dots appear on his head.
“A perusal of the video (Annexure A1) by various persons including former security personnel leads to a prima facie conclusion that this laser could emanate from a potential weapon such as a sniper gun.”
Seeking a probe into the incident, the Congress had said that this is a cause of serious alarm, citing the assassinations of Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother and father still being etched in public memory. In the letter, the Congress leaders also hit out at the UP government for a lapse in security.
“This is also an alarming lapse on part of the UP administration, which is responsible for the peripheral security of Shri Rahul Gandhi. Bereft of any political difference, security of Shri Rahul Gandhi is the first responsibility of your Government and the Ministry.”
The letter pointed out that the Congress President was a high-risk candidate during the elections.
