Eminent Historian Prof Mushirul Hasan Passes Away

NEW DELHI— Eminent Historian Professor Mushirul Hasan and former vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia passed away on Monday morning. He was 71.

Prof. Hasan’s health started declining after he was critically injured in a road accident in 2014. He is survived by his wife Prof. Zoya Hasan, a noted academician and political scientist.

An alumnus of the Aligarh Muslim University and the University of Cambridge, Prof. Hasan has also served as the Director-General of the National Archives of India, the President of the Indian History Congress, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia between 1992-96 and later in the capacity of VC between 2004-09.

Hasan, has been known for his contribution to social sciences was also the former Vice-Chairman, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, former president of Indo-Iran Society in Iran Embassy and former president of  Indian History Congress in 2002 among numerous other posts he held in his illustrious career.

Hasan has been credited for writing extensively on the partition of India, and histories of Islam in south-Asia. His book India Partition: The Other Face of Freedom, documents how Partition displaced millions and left behind a legacy of hostility and bitterness between the governments as well as the people from India and Pakistan.

In his book When Stone Walls Cry, Prof. Hasan presents the unknown facets of prison life of the Nehrus and how that transformed their vision and character. He documents how Jawaharlal Nehru decided to guide India on to the world stage as a modern nation, contrary to Mahatma Gandhi’s imagination of Hind Swaraj.

His namaz-e-Janaza shall be performed at 1.00 pm at Babul Ilm mosque and 2.00 pm at Jamia Mosque and burial shall take place in Jamia graveyard.
